BIO
Lily Swab is a self-taught mixed-media artist from Tulsa, Oklahoma. She is
currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Swab is continually exploring new
mediums and visual languages within her practice. An idiosyncratic nature forms
the foundation of her process. This often leads her toward unexpected
techniques and discoveries.
Her unconventional use of graphite and water blurs the line between drawing and
painting. Treating graphite as a fluid, she encourages movement, diffusion and
organic textures. Water softens the edges and introduces a measure of
unpredictability. The interaction between serendipity and control is central to her
work.
Although she now lives in New York, much of her imagery is drawn from her
Western roots and pop cultural influences. These become a vehicle for
expression. Additionally, the use of the written word is an important part of her
oeuvre and is featured in many of her compositions.
Prompted by personal loss, Swab has used her art as both a refuge and a
revolution. She uses her art as a tool for expression, healing, personal
development and growth.
